During TAIMUN, committee rooms filled with chairs, delegates, and admin members are bustling with action. Resolutions are merged, speeches are made, and points are debated. Committees in session hold the very essence of MUN conferences, but let’s not forget - all of this is made possible by the diligent and extensive preparation of the TAIMUN team, which consists of TAIMUN directors, chairs, and other administrative members.

TAIMUN directors assist and supervise student officers in preparing for TAIMUN. The tasks of directors include contacting attending schools, coordinating officer positions, choosing committee topics, etc. Their responsibilities range from preparing conference materials to little details such as organizing lunch for the conference. Despite their various jobs, Mark Helman, TAIMUN Conference Coordinator, adds that everything is primarily “student-centered and student-run.”

Delegates come to the conference both nervous and excited for the debate. However, chairs go through the same nerve-wracking state months before the actual conference. Chairs have the responsibilities of writing chair reports, which require hours of research. Chair reports are essential to delegates because they provide a basic summary of committee topics and are often used as guidelines for delegates in resolution writing. “I wrote 4 and a half pages!” exclaimed WHO Deputy Chair, Jocelyn Loo (AST), with Chair Civia Chen (IBST) vigorously nodding in agreement. In preparation for the conference, chairs go through training sessions and mock conferences to ensure that delegates are able to enjoy a professional conference.

After all the work and effort put into the prior stages of the conference, TAIMUN directors and chairs must continue working throughout the entire conference. So next time you see a member of the TAIMUN team, don’t forget to thank them for making TAIMUN such a successful and enriching event!
