-The Resignation of Pope Benedict XVI (2/11/13)- On Monday, February 11th, Pope Benedict of the Roman Catholic Church resigned due to his poor health status; he was the first pope to resign in 600 years after the resignation of Pope Gregory XII in 1415.

 

-Boston Marathon Bombing Incident (4/15/13)- On April 15, two pressure cooker bombs went off near the finish line, causing more than 200 casualties.

 

-Super Typhoon Haiyan Hits the Philippines (11/8/13) - Haiyan, the third largest tropical typhoon recording in history, hits the mid-section of the Philippine Islands with winds of more than 150 mile per hour; there were 6000 deaths and more than three million displaced.

 

-2020 Olympics Held in Tokyo (9/7/13) – After hosting the Summer Olympics in 1964, Japan, defeated Istanbul and Madrid, has won its right to host the 2020 Olympics.

 

- Nokia Sold (9/2/13) - After 2 years of teamwork, Microsoft finally decides to buy Nokia’s main handset for 7.2 billion US Dollars.

 

-Nelson Mandela dies in Johannesburg (12/6/13) - Nelson Mandela, the first black president ever elected in South Africa, led South African’s transition from white majority rule after serving 27 years in prison and dies at the age of 95 in Johannesburg.

 

-Destructive Earthquake strikes Sichuan Province Once Again (4/20/13) – After the massive quake in 2008, Sichuan was hit again by a 6.6 magnitude quake on 8 am that day causing more than 6000 casualties.

 

-Bangladesh Factory Disaster ( 4/24/13) – More than 1,100 factory workers killed in the collapse, leaving more than 3 million Bangladesh workers unemployed in Rana Plaza.

 

-Kenya Mall Shooting Incident (9/21/13) - On Saturday, September 21st, unknown gunmen attacked the Westgate Mall in Nairobi. After three days of gun fight the Kenyan military finally secured the area and ended the tragic incident.

 

-Frozen Chicago (3/5/13) – On Tuesday, March 5th, more than 30 miles per hours of cold wind was blowing in the streets of Chicago, and more than 1,100 flights were cancelled that day. It was the biggest blizzard storm since 2011.

 

-Tumblr bought Yahoo for 1.1 Billion USD (5/17/13) – Marissa Mayer, Yahoo’s chief executive promises that there will be no Yahoo brand in Tumblr after it was bought.

 

-Success in Cloning Human Stem Cells (5/16/13) – After Dolly the cloned sheep was created 17 years ago, scientists have recently found out a way to clone embryonic stem cells that could develop into nerve, muscle, and other tissues.

 

-Meteor crashes into Russia (2/16/13) – NASA’s definition of a tiny meteor blasts into Russia’s Ural region with the force of 300,000 ton of TNT on Friday morning. The boom caused more than 1,000 casualties.

 

-Spanish Train Crash (7/24/13) – The train, traveling in a high speed of 190 kilometer per hour instead of 80 kilometers per hour, tipped when it sped through a curve. The train driver, Jose Garzon was charged of “79 counts of homicide and numerous offences of bodily harm committed through professional recklessness”.

 

-Boeing 777 Crashes In San Francisco Airport (7/6/13) – Boeing 777 with 307 passengers, crash landed on San Francisco Airport after a flight across the Pacific Ocean from South Korea. There were 2 dead and numerous with minor injuries.

- Delegates make around 7-8 Facebook friends per conference

- 90% of delegates are looking forward to TAIMUN XII!

- 2.5 hours is the average amount of time it will take delegates to commute to TAIMUN

- 100% of delegates have been to Taichung before

- 47.4% of delegates are bringing a Mac, 36.8% are bringing a PC, 15.8% are not bringing computers

- 1.3 hours is the average amount of time it takes delegates to pack for TAIMUN
