Intro to the Disarmament and International Security Committee Chairs

By: Szu Yu Liu, International Bilingual School at Hsinchu Science Park

The Disarmament and International Security Committee (CDIS) is ready to experience TAIMUN XII under Chairs William Lin and Ben Ho. With two extremely experienced Chairs, this year’s CDIS will no doubt bring some intense debate to the table and come up with fruitful resolutions.

As a senior at American School in Taichung (AST), William Lin has spent six MUN conferences as delegates and even more as part of the Admin staff. This year’s TAIMUN marks his seventh MUN conference as well as his first time chairing. William not only anticipates the great opportunity of being able to chair for CDIS, but he also looks forward to meeting new people.

Also a senior, co-chair Ben Ho from Hui Wen High School has participated in fourteen MUN conferences, including three chairing experiences, making TAIMUN XII his fifteenth conference. This year, Ben especially looks forward to seeing what kind of resolutions CDIS will come up with. He thinks that “resolutions from CDIS are always special” due to the great number of “intelligent and active delegates” as well the debatable issues in the committee. Ben hopes to see not only great resolutions, but also the capability of CDIS delegates to come up with interesting and unique resolutions.

Outside of their MUN lives, both William and Ben express a great interest in sports, especially basketball. With William’s favorite player as Lebron James and Ben’s favorite team as Miami Heat, it is safe to say that these two chairs will get along during the conference. William further shows his love for sports by saying “We, [the whole committee] can ball up anywhere anytime, maybe even during the conference in our suits and jackets.” He hopes for the delegates to be well prepared for the conference and rigorously participate in the debate just as one would during a basketball game.

Last but not least, the two chairs remind the delegates that although they should display formal and diplomatic manners during the conference, they also should not forget to have fun throughout TAIMUN XII.
