Intro to the Environmental Committee Chairs
By: Catherine Lu, Hsinchu American School
Offering real-life opportunities of being a leader is one of the important purposes of every Model United Nation conference. The TAIMUN XII conference is no exception. This year, the Environment Committee is exceedingly fortunate to have two very experienced chair and co-chair.
Jessica Lin, who will be chair of the Environment Committee for TAIMUN XII, has participated in eight conferences so far. Previously at HSINMUN XI she was the co-chair of the Security Council. Throughout the conference, she was excited to lead delegates by passing knowledge about debate and communication. She said, “People often think ‘oh it’s just the environment, and we have other things to focus on’ and do not seem to take it seriously. However, if this mentality continues to occupy the minds of all leaders, the world we use to have will quickly be destroyed. I think my issue is also very global and urgent.” Her enthusiasm and strong opinions are definitely the reasons why she is most suitable for this position.
The quote “life is unexpected” best describes Jessica. At her first conference, HSINMUN VII, she did not speak until halfway through the debate when the chair called on her. With no choice, she stood up in front of the podium for at least a minute in shock before making up a question. Today, she is an outgoing, determined and hard-working Model United Nation chair, who is not afraid of public speaking anymore. This year, she expects new delegates to speak out as much as they can. As for herself, she will doubtlessly try her best to talk eloquently with no stutter.
The co-chair this year for the Environment Committee is Kelly Lai. Meeting new, unique people and gaining public speaking experiences are two things she love the most about Model United Nation. She has attended seven conferences in all, and enjoyed most the ninth annual THIMUN conference in Singapore. There, she met numerous incredibly amazing delegates and made lots of new friends. She still remembers the first time she applied for chair of TAS MS TAIMUN, which she describes as simply “memorable and amazing.” In addition, she cares about the environment substantially. To her, “the issue of balancing urbanization and environmental protection is a conflict happening around us every day. While cities develop, they fail to sustain the environment around them, which is why delegates are to collaborate together.”
Some of her hobbies include tennis, golfing, and singing. The main reason she enjoys them is because they free her from stress and concerns. Being grateful and cherishing every single moment of her life and caring about those who are important to her are her most valuable characteristics.
