Intro to the Special Committee on Sustainable Development Chairs
By: Tim Wang, International Bilingual School at Hsinchu Science Park
Two diligent chairs, John Huang (chair) and Minnie Cheng (co-chair), are leading the Sustainable Development Committee (SUSDEV), which debates on the issue of Africa’s malnutrition, extreme poverty and establishment of sustainable development goals.
John Huang, a senior from American School of Taichung (AST), has attended more than ten conferences, both regional and international. He declares, “MUN has been one of my best extracurricular activities”. To him, MUN is more than a formal debate; it is a time when delegates are engaged in critical thinking. He expressed “MUN is a formal debate, so when one is thinking logically or attacking others' arguments, one is actually developing the ability to think critically.” Aside from being so serious, John is a very talented intellectual. He spends his leisure practicing violin, playing basketball, and reading. Chair John expects delegates to be prepared to contribute to the solutions.
Minnie Cheng, a junior from Taipei European School (TES), is the co-chair. Unlike John Huang, this is Minnie’s first time being a chair. However, she is just as experienced as John. She started attending MUN conferences during her junior year. “Apart from the debate, MUN also offers an opportunity to make friends and meet some interesting people; many delegates bonded quickly in a short period of time. For me, MUN isn’t just about debating and passing resolutions but enjoying the time being there.” She believes that attending MUN has widened her knowledge on global affairs. Beside the intellectual side of her, Minnie also likes to ice-skate, paint, and watch. “Lastly, I hope all delegates will enjoy this year's conference and make the most out of debates!” declares Minnie.
John Huang and Minnie hope to assist delegates throughout the MUN conference. They strive to make this year’s conference as successful and fruitful as the past.
