Intro to the Special Committee on World Health Organization Chairs

By Philip Wong, International Bilingual School at Hsinchu Science Park

Civia Chen, our chair for the World Health Organization from the International Bilingual School at Tainan Science Park, expects this years’ MUN conference to be significantly memorable and enjoyable. When asked about her hopes of this years’ conference, her reply showed great anticipation and ambition, responding, "I do hope that my committee greatly impresses me with their debate skills, and I do hope that in my own committee, I can positively impact new MUN delegates with my leadership skills and past MUN experience." As a hard-working individual who also shares the joy of debating, Civia has participated in multiple MUN conferences across Taiwan and even challenged herself by competing in rigorous debate tournaments including the well recognized World Scholars Cup. Not only is Civia eager to meet new people in the upcoming conference, but also is thrilled that she will get the opportunity to chair the World Health Organization committee; for the most part, the interesting resolution topics intrigue her. Civia is particularly fascinated in the issue of communicable diseases since she planning the major in a field related to that. Civia remarked, "this MUN conference will give me a political spin on a scientific sub-area that I am interested in pursuing." Although Civia has two Forensics and Debate Tournaments to prepare for, she still makes time to read, bike, play table tennis, and of course prepare for TAIMUN XII.

Co-Chairing with Civia, Jocelyn Loo from American School in Taichung is extremely excited for TAIMUN XII, as it will be her eighth MUN conference but she shows somewhat nervousness since it will be her first time chairing. Jocelyn comments how she learned a great deal from past conferences and even adds, "The most valuable thing I've learn from MUN is how to give a convincing speech." Not only is Jocelyn appreciative of the skills she has learned in the past but also hopes to refine her skills and gradually learn to become an active, responsible chair. When Jocelyn is not preparing for MUN, she enjoys reading, sketching, and watching television shows. As a final message, Jocelyn knows this years TAIMUN will be a success and hopes all delegates will participate in the conference and contribute to the debates.
